National Aeromodeling Championships (NATS)

July 4, 2016 - August 4, 2016

Celebrating 90 years of competition: NATS 2016

Thousands of pilots from across the country will be visiting the Academy of Model Aeronautics’ International Aeromodeling Center throughout the month of July for the 90th National Aeromodeling Championships.

The public is invited to watch the different competitions and are encouraged to welcome the visitors as they visit different locations in the area.

RC Scale Aerobatics (July 5-8): RC scale models are miniature replicas of full-scale aircraft. They are judged for the degree of perfection in matching the full-scale aircrafts measurements and maneuvers.

RC Aerobatics (Pattern) (July 10-15): RC Aerobatic aircraft are judged according to the degree of precision with which they are able to execute a schedule of maneuvers. These maneuvers require a high degree of piloting skill and a specialized aircraft with a great deal of power.

RC Pylon (July 15-22): One of the most fun competitions to watch! RC Pylon Racing is high-speed racing with small aircraft that can reach up to 200 mph.

Control-Line and RC Combat (July 18-21): Wild and exciting action in Combat makes it one of the spectators’ favorites to watch. Two highly maneuverable aircraft, each towing a streamer, attempt to cut each others’s streamers or string leaders.

RC Soaring (July 23-July 30): RC Soaring is flown by different classes of sailplanes or gliders. These aircraft are towed aloft by 12-volt electric winches. They have no other form of propulsion. Competitors are based on some form of precision flight and landing time.

RC Helicopter (August 1-4): RC helicopters are a blast to watch. Each class has an established set of maneuvers that pilots must accomplish.
