The Odyssey of Homer

May 1, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 11:15 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Wednesday, repeating until May 15, 2019

Course meets six Wednesdays, April 10-May 15, 10-11:15 a.m. The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other Homeric epic. The poem mainly focuses on the Greek hero Odysseus (known as Ulysses in Roman myths), King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the fall of Troy. This course offers an insightful examination of the most important episodes in the Odyssey. The lectures provide an easy-to-understand approach to a work that can often be intimidating to first-time readers, and it provides a helpful introduction to the grandest adventure story in Western literature. These DVD lectures, produced by The Great Courses, feature Dr. Elizabeth Vandiver, Professor of Classics and Clement Biddle Penrose Professor of Latin at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. The Center currently has the 1669 edition of the Odyssey on exhibit.
