Victorian Mourning Customs
July 25, 2016 @ 4:00 am - 1:00 pm
The saddest of all experiences is the death of a loved one. Families living during the Victorian era were very acquainted with it. It was an era when one out of every 20 babies died before their first birthday, and the life expectancy for those who made it past their first birthday was only age forty-two. It was a time when death was more visible and stuck closer to home than any of us living today can imagine. Karen Good of the Delaware County Historical society will discuss some of the steps and procedures of proper mourning developed during this era, inspired in part by Queen Victoria.
